Getting behind in my blogging so here's a short winter's overview. So far it's been a mild winter with just a couple of episodes of really cold temps and light snowfalls. Only had to shovel any real amounts of snow a couple of times, otherwise only a dusting or and inch or so. But this has it's drawbacks for my garden. Hope the mulch I put on will be enough because there sure hasn't been much lasting snowcover. To make things worse there's been 2 warm thaws-last week sunday it was 60 degrees with huge amounts of snow melt and then down to single digit thereafter. Now there are frozen puddles in many parts of the gardens. The area between the house and garden shed is one big icy area where Lily slips, slides and gets her leash caught up on ice jags. The birdfeeders have had lots of visitors and need to fill them every few days. Have noticed big groups of same species birds feeding at the same time- once 15 cardinals, another time 7 blue jays. One day there were 8 doves trying comically to feed at the same time knocking each other off as the tried to fly from the feeders roof down to the perch area. There also has been more woodpeckers this year, quite a few downy and on red headed comes around a lot. I added peanuts to the mix in the herb garden feeder this year and that might be part of the attraction. A lot of the little birds like sparrows, nuthatches, chickadees, finches like to sit of the arbovite hedge branches on sunny days catching the warm rays and on cold , windy days the perch on the inner branches away from the wind.
